Stevenage Thrash Walsall 6–1 as Mellon Hits Hat-Trick
Stevenage Produce Six-Goal Masterclass Against Walsall
Stevenage delivered one of the biggest results of the latest EFL Trophy action on Tuesday night, sweeping aside Walsall 6–1 at the Pallet-Track Bescot Stadium.
The visitors took control early and never allowed Walsall to recover after opening the scoring in the 11th minute. Michael Mellon was at the centre of the performance, scoring three times as Stevenage turned the match into a one-sided contest.
Walsall briefly gave their supporters hope when Lewis Simper headed in an equaliser in the 17th minute. That response, however, proved short-lived.
Stevenage restored their lead in the 29th minute through Wanya Marçal before Jordan Houghton extended the advantage three minutes later. Mellon then struck again in the 42nd minute to give the visitors a commanding 4–1 lead at half-time.
Mellon Completes His Hat-Trick
Walsall needed a major turnaround after the interval, but Stevenage continued to create the better opportunities.
Mellon completed his hat-trick in the 58th minute, adding Stevenage’s fifth goal of the night. The striker’s third goal capped an outstanding individual display and effectively ended any hope of a Walsall comeback.
Ben Broggio then added a sixth in the 63rd minute, finishing from inside the box after being played through by Marçal.
Stevenage continued to look dangerous in the closing stages and came close to adding further goals, but the six-goal haul was enough to secure a comprehensive victory.
Walsall Unable to Recover After Early Collapse
Walsall had moments in the opening period and did manage to get back on level terms through Simper, but their defensive problems quickly became apparent.
Stevenage repeatedly found space around the penalty area, while Walsall struggled to contain the visitors’ movement and attacking combinations.
The second half followed a similar pattern. Although Walsall improved for brief periods, Stevenage remained in control and continued to threaten whenever they moved forward.
The final scoreline is Walsall 1–6 Stevenage, which reflected the visitors’ dominance after they established a three-goal advantage before the interval.
Stevenage Make a Statement in the EFL Trophy
The victory represents a significant start to Stevenage’s EFL Trophy campaign and will provide considerable confidence after such a convincing away performance.
The match also highlighted the attacking threat posed by Mellon, who accounted for half of Stevenage’s goals.
For Walsall, the heavy defeat will raise questions about their defensive organisation and their ability to respond when matches turn against them.
The result was particularly striking because the two sides entered the competition as established English Football League clubs, yet the gap between them on the night was substantial.
