Gakpo Scores Late as Netherlands Draw 1-1 With Germany

Cody Gakpo struck in the 92nd minute to earn the Netherlands a 1-1 draw against Germany and deny Jurgen Klopp victory in his first game in charge of Die Mannschaft.

Germany took the lead through Felix Nmecha, who fired home from close range after the ball fell to him in the box.

 The goal came amid controversy as Netherlands forward Brian Brobbey was receiving treatment for an injury in Germany’s half.

Germany missed a huge chance to double their advantage when Karim Adeyemi fired wide with the goal at his mercy. 

The Netherlands then grew into the contest after the break, with Denzel Dumfries and debutant Mexx Meerdink forcing saves from Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Just when Germany appeared set to hold on for victory, Gakpo produced a superb volley at the back post in the second minute of stoppage time to level the scores.

 The Liverpool forward’s finish was his sixth goal in as many international appearances.

The draw means Germany avoid a third consecutive defeat in all competitions, while the Netherlands have now lost just once at home since 2023.

 It also leaves both Klopp and Xavi without a victory in their first competitive games as national-team coaches.
