2027 AFCON Qualifiers Begin as 48 Nations Chase Final Spots
The race for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations begins in earnest on Thursday as 48 countries launch a six-round qualifying campaign for next year’s tournament.
The 48 teams have been divided into 12 groups, with the top two teams in nine groups securing qualification for the 24-team finals.
Co-hosts Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda are also competing in the qualifiers, although only one other team from each of their groups will qualify alongside them.
The finals will be staged across Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda from June 19 to July 17, 2027.
However, the identity of the previous champions remains unresolved after Senegal appealed against CAF’s decision to award the 2025 title to Morocco.
Senegal defeated Morocco in the final but were later stripped of the trophy after their players walked off the pitch during a late protest.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport is expected to hear Senegal’s appeal on October 8.
Morocco begin their qualifying campaign at home against Gabon in Group A on Thursday before facing Lesotho in Bloemfontein on September 29.
Senegal, meanwhile, open their Group J campaign away to Mozambique on Friday, with new coach Patrick Vieira beginning his tenure following their disappointing World Cup campaign.
Other major fixtures include an intriguing Group C clash between Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana on Thursday, while South Africa host Guinea on Saturday.
Tunisia, who are seeking a record-extending 18th consecutive appearance at the AFCON finals, begin their Group H campaign against Uganda on Thursday under new coach Moin Chaabani.
