Iheanacho One Goal Away From Bursaspor Scoring Record
Kelechi Iheanacho is closing in on a piece of Bursaspor history after extending his remarkable scoring run since moving to Turkey.
The Super Eagles forward scored twice on Saturday as Bursaspor secured a 2-1 away victory over Batman Petrolspor in the Turkish 1 Lig. The win also lifted the club to the top of the table.
For Iheanacho, the goals continued an extraordinary start to life at his new club. He has now scored 11 goals and provided two assists in eight league appearances, finding the net in every league match he has played.
His latest brace also means he has scored in eight consecutive league games, bringing him level with a record set more than a decade ago by Brazilian forward Fernandao.
Iheanacho Joins Fernandao in Bursaspor History
Fernandao produced his eight-match scoring streak during the 2014/15 Süper Lig campaign, scoring in consecutive league matches from November 2014 through January 2015.
The Brazilian finished that season with 22 league goals and seven assists, having scored 13 times in his first 18 league appearances.
More than 10 years later, Iheanacho has now matched his eight-game scoring sequence, despite competing in Turkey’s second tier.
The Nigerian had previously set a personal milestone by scoring in six successive matches. Goals against Manisa FK, Esenler Erokspor and Batman Petrolspor in his last three outings have since taken his run to eight games.
One more league goal would take Iheanacho beyond Fernandao and give him the longest scoring streak in Bursaspor’s history.
Bursaspor Lead the Way
Iheanacho’s goals have come at a crucial time for Bursaspor, who have made an impressive start to the campaign.
Saturday’s victory took the club to 19 points from eight matches, with six wins and one draw. They currently sit three points ahead of Kayserispor, who have a game in hand.
The former Manchester City and Leicester City striker joined Bursaspor as a free agent after his spell with Celtic, where he helped the Scottish giants win the domestic league and cup double.
His immediate impact in Turkey has been significant, and his current scoring form has quickly turned attention towards a club record that has remained untouched since Fernandao’s remarkable 2014/15 campaign.
Iheanacho Back in the Super Eagles Picture
The striker’s resurgence has also earned him a return to the Nigeria national team.
Iheanacho has been included in Nigeria’s squad for next month’s friendly against Russia, marking his first international call-up in more than a year.
His last appearance for the Super Eagles came during the 2025 Unity Cup in London. His current form gives him an opportunity to make a strong case for a more regular role under head coach Eric Chelle.
For now, though, Iheanacho’s immediate target is clear. One more goal for Bursaspor would see him move from matching Fernandao’s record to owning it outright.
